Basketball Wales appoints World Class Coach as Senior Men’s Head Coach.

Keith Mair has been appointed Senior Head Coach to Wales’ to mens national basketball team.

Keith, the former New Zealand mens Head Coach, who currently resides in North Wales brings a wealth of top class International basketball experience to Wales. Most notably, Keith led the New Zealand Tall Blacks to qualify for the 2000 Olympic Games as well as leading them to qualify for 2 World Championships. He has also had a long career as a Head Coach within the professional league in New Zealand. 

Keith is very familiar with Basketball in the UK as he also held the position as CEO of England Basketball between 2003 and 2013.

Keith said “I am very pleased to take on this role, and would hope to be able to support and develop our coaching network and also benefit the progression of International and elite Basketball in Wales through my experiences of working in New Zealand and England Basketball”.

Darren Oakey, Director of Elite National Development and board member of Basketball Wales said ‘ I am absolutely delighted that we have been able to secure the services of Keith.  I am very excited about the wealth of knowledge and experience he can bring to all areas of our International Programme. We are looking forward to releasing the new training calendar for the Senior Men's preparation for the 2016 European Championships along with the new Head Coach's support staff very soon.

The ENDC are taking a big jump forward by introducing a U11's boy's and girl's teams for 2015. This is for players born in 2004 and after, with an aim to compete in a International tournament in June.
For this to happen, this group will take over the time slot and dates for our present Mini's programme, so the next scheduled Mini's session will now be a trial for the Wales U11's boy's and girl's on the 14th Feb. We would like to invite any player born 2004 and after, boy's and girls's to attend and depending on the numbers and standard, a squad will be selected and announced on this page.
Players are to arrive at 10.30am for registration. This trial will be free, you will be required to bring along with you a passport size photograph.If you are presently a member of one of the ENDC groups, this is available to you also.

Basketball Wales Officiating and Scania Cup Continue Partnership

Basketball Wales Officiating is pleased to announce that we have secured the opportunity to nominate two Basketball Wales referees to attend the prestigious Scania Cup tournament held over the Easter period in , Sodertalje Sweden.


Scania Cup is an international basketball tournament for U12 - U18 teams comprising of teams from Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Iceland and Finland. It has been running for over 30 years and has hosted a referee clinic for 25 years.


In recent years the referee clinic has had well over 100 referees attending with top referee Instructors from Sweden, FIBA Europe and FIBA World delivering educational seminars and providing feedback to referees on game performance. Each game is officiated utilising 3 person mechanics.


Any Basketball Wales referee looking to further their own personal development and attend this camp should email officiating@basketballwales.com by Friday 6th February 2015

Swansea Storm host successful Yr 6 Primary School Festival

Swansea Storm Basketball Cub in conjunction with Swansea Sports Development team held a mini basketball festival on Wednesday 21st January at the LC leisure Center which was attended by 223 Year 6 pupils from all across the city.


More of these festivals are planned in the coming months to offer Mini Basketball opportunities to pupils in Years 3, 4 and 5.


Swansea Storm Head Coach and Active Young Peoples officer Gavin Lewis said "the event was a great success all the pupils thoroughly enjoyed playing and competing against other schools. The players also had the opportunity to meet Swansea Storm Senior Players who were in attendance to offer some coaching tips and advice"

Basketball Wales National Team Coaching Vacancy


Basketball Wales would like to invite applications for the position of Wales National Team
Senior Men’s Head Coach. The successful candidate will be responsible for preparing the
Senior Men’s Team to compete in the 2016 Small Nations Fiba Tournament, Kingdom Cup
and qualifying for the 2018 Commonwealth Games. With such an exciting and demanding
competition schedule, Basketball Wales are looking for a experienced and enthusiastic
Coach to work within a well established development programme and to work along side
our ENDC National Team Staff.


The position will be voluntary, although as you can imagine, it is a fantastic and rewarding opportunity to coach at the highest level of the game at World and European level.

Suitable level of criteria to fulfil the position.
UKCC or BW Level 3, FECC or equivalent or FIBA approved License.


Suitable experience to fulfil the position.
Minimum of 2 years as a Senior National Team Assistant Coach, or 10 years as a Head
Coach with a National League Standard Club or equivalent to include minimum of 3 years
as a Senior Head Coach or equivalent level. International experience would be preferred
but not essential.


Appointment will be subject to Enhanced DBS Check and reference check
Short listed candidates will be invited to interviews to be held at Rhondda Fach Sports
Centre, Tylorstown on 1st February 2015
