Basketball Wales congratulate Welsh players who were selected for DengTop50 Camp

James Lloyd (18) and Alex Koukouravas(17), both members of the successful bronze winning FIBA Wales u18 team, were selected to attend the 'invitation only' Deng Top 50 Camp recently held in London. The young men spent 4 days playing and training with some of the best players in the UK and even got to meet Luol Deng himself!

James, who also made it into the Top 20 All Star team at the camp said "I enjoyed the camp a lot, and gained massively from it, I came away with an understanding of what I need to do to reach the next level in basketball. I also loved playing with my fellow Welshman and being selected for the Top 20 was icing on the cake. I'm more than certain Alex will be in the same position next year!"

Alex said " Being selected for the camp was an honour and an amazing experience. The standard of basketball was very high and helped me to benchmark myself and to understand what I now need to work on. It was great having James there too - we even got to play on the same team."

Coach Vear, head coach for the camp, explained that this is the second year for the camp and this year the standard was very close across the participants, "demonstrated by how much the leader board changed over the 4 days. It was great to see so much

talent. We hope that every young man walked away a better player as a result of this experience. "

Deng backs introduction of Club Skills Guide

Great Britain and NBA star Luol Deng is backing the introduction of a British Basketball Club Skills Guide to help the development of coaches in the UK

The new British Basketball coaching resource is being released this week to the home countries.

It is specifically designed for clubs, schools and national league teams and has a clear focus on teaching the game and its fundamental skills.

“The Club Skills Guide (CSG) has been designed as the minimum standard for teaching and coaching basketball at club level in the UK and will be made available through the home nation governing bodies,” explained National Teams Director, Warwick Cann.

“I believe it completes a significant coach guidance package and provides a compelling link between the recent public release of the ‘Areas of Emphasis’ document and coaching at club level.

“Each age group also has different challenges for coaches in terms of player readiness to learn, experience and skill level - the CSG discusses and supports these challenges.”

The introduction of the CSG has been endorsed by Deng, who also believes it can make a big difference.

“Every year I see the incredible passion that all of the coaches have for the game which is amazing,” stated the Miami Heat small forward.

“But we also need education and development to help fuel that passion into good consistent teaching across the whole of the UK.

“The Club Skills Guide is a great step forward to help coaches develop skills of players.”

Specifically there are four key modules in the CSG designed to assist clubs and coaches in the planning, organisation, delivery and development of young basketball players.

• Club Coaching Guidance – Describes the role of the coach and club in each player’s development through teaching and understanding.

• Age Group Organisation – Identifies the stages of player development and how they fit within international basketball.

• Planning for Training – Details the priority for training and the relevance of competition, as well as keys to improving practice.

• Game Style and Principles of Play –Clarifies the phases, principles and priorities of individual and team tactics.

The CSG also incorporates competency and coaching checklists, as well as annual season plans for each age group.

“The Club Skills Guide is an important tool for the development of our future players, coaches and coaching standards within progressive clubs,” stressed Vladan Dragosavac, Technical and Performance Manager for Basketball England

“This is an excellent resource on the four key areas all successful coaches and clubs require to achieve higher standards in player development.

“We are able, for the first time, to provide practical guidance for clubs on the ‘what’ to coach for developing players; the ‘how’ to coach in terms of planning and content and most importantly; where the focus for clubs should be to secure further player development and improvements in playing standards at all levels and ages.

“The Guide brings the ‘Areas of Emphasis’ to life, providing practical tools and assistance to help clubs and coaches construct better player development programmes.”

The sentiment was also echoed by Barry Lang, Head of Basketball at basketballscotland.

He stated, "The Club Skills Guide is an awesome toolkit for both players and coaches.

“The ability to break down key technical and tactical elements of the game in to bite size chunks helps the reader understand fundamental 'age and stage' skills.

“basketballscotland will be utilising this excellent resource in our Coach Education and Performance Programme.”

Meanwhile Basketball Wales Director, Gavin Williams added, “The Club Skills Guide (CSG) will be launched by Basketball Wales via the two regional leagues that operate in the principality - these are the South Wales Basketball Association (SWBA) and the North Wales Basketball Association (NWBA).”

The CSG will also be implemented within the Basketball Wales Regional Development squads covering North, East, South and West Wales Regions.

CSG Author Warwick Cann had the last word and concluded, “My hope is that the CSG will really help clubs and coaches to raise the skill level of players in the UK.

“Many who have reviewed it say it’s exactly what is needed and it’s now over to the club coaches to implement.”
